Understanding institutionally supported free college programs

Abstract This chapter examines institutionally funded free community college programs that address specific community workforce needs. Within the article, the authors showcase “Rediscover LCCC,” a foundation‐funded scholarship program at Laramie County Community College in Wyoming that pays students’ tuition and fees for up to three years in specific, high‐demand degree and certificate programs, such as information technology, healthcare, and the trades. Preliminary outcome data is shared. The article concludes by encouraging community college leaders to support such programs as a way for students to attain work‐ready degrees and certificates needed by the local community, without incurring student debt.
