Integrating BIM and GIS for Disaster Management in Smart Cities: Key Benefits and Challenges

Abstract Building information modeling (BIM) and geographic information systems (GIS) serve as valuable tools for digitizing information related to the physical, functional, and geographical aspects of structures. The integration of these technologies can provide timely and accurate information to facilitate quick recovery from disasters. However, challenges such as loss of semantic information, data incompatibility, and redundancy persist. This study identifies key benefits and challenges of BIM-GIS integration using Delphi studies with industry experts and a questionnaire administered to smart city infrastructure users. Benefits include effective information management, enhanced visualization, and improved coordination, while challenges encompass loss of semantic information, data incompatibility, and redundancy. Results highlight the importance of developing strategies to ensure smooth integration for effective disaster management.
