The Story of Compassion: From Ancient Texts to Modern Practice


Abstract There is a lack of consensus on the definition of compassion among mental health professionals. In addition, mental health professionals also differ in how compassion is connected to related constructs including pity, sympathy, and empathy. This article explores the evolution of compassion from ancient times to contemporary conceptualization in western mental health treatment. Application of compassion in therapeutic practice, mindfulness, and wellness is discussed.
