Abstract |
Through this introductory chapter, I explore the unique potential of music education to cultivate the type of positive global dispositions today’s young people (tomorrow’s citizens) will need to “build bridges among themselves” (Greene M. Educ Res 22(1):17, 1993), and solve difficult problems that cut across traditional geographic borders. Many recent global education initiatives have focused on the knowledge and skills students will need to be successful in an interconnected and ever-changing world. Far less attention has been paid to the type of disposition required to work collaboratively and effectively with people from many different cultural backgrounds in many different geographic locations. This chapter closes with a discussion of several distinct reasons why educational scholars and practitioners should seriously consider music education as a powerful vehicle through which the goals of global education can be realized. These rationales lay the groundwork for the chapters that follow. |
