Abstract |
Disruptive behaviors in adolescents have historically been grouped broadly into four categories: (1) inattention, (2) hyperactivity and impulsivity, (3) oppositionality and defiance, and (4) conduct problems and antisocial behaviors including aggression. Some of these behaviors at low levels are normative at certain ages. However, these behaviors are considered problematic when the adolescent experiences impairment due to the chronicity and severity of the symptoms. Both typical and problematic manifestations of disruptive behaviors are discussed herein. Further, the developmental progression and unique challenges facing adolescents with disruptive behaviors are elucidated. Finally, causes of, and treatments for, these disorders are presented. |
