Strengthening Student Success: Investing in the Future of Pharmacy at University of Wyoming Through Wellness

Abstract Objective: The University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy (UWSOP) emphasizes a culture of wellness among students, faculty, and staff. Several initiatives have been implemented to make well-being a priority among our members. Methods: Wellness is introduced as a crucial component of student success during orientation, and ideas are provided for students to practice wellness as they matriculate. A block schedule has been implemented to concentrate classes to four days, allowing students the opportunity to utilize the “off-day” to focus on personal needs. Results: Opportunities provide student socialization, including a holiday social and community participation in Homecoming festivities. Student organizations encourage physical wellness through activities including free yoga, a 5 K run/walk, as well as mental wellness through a “canvas and cocktails/mocktails” session each semester. Financial wellness is highlighted among the fourth year as students prepare to graduate and enter their careers. Among faculty and staff, an annual strategic planning retreat with opportunities to socialize is held at the beginning of each academic year. The SOP created a “Secret Encourager” program throughout the year as a way to intentionally encourage another faculty or staff within the school. The Faculty Development Committee offers a number of wellness opportunities and their monthly newsletter includes a wellness domain highlight. Additionally, mindfulness and meditation tools are available for faculty and have been utilized in some courses to help students focus on wellness. Conclusions: Wellness among all stakeholders is important for career satisfaction and allows for healthier investment in student success and the profession.
